How to Read Your Prescription

OD (Right Eye)
OD stands for "oculus dexter" which is Latin for "right eye".

OS (Left Eye)
OS stands for "oculus sinister" which is Latin for “left eye”.

Sphere (SPH) - also known as Power (PWR)
They mean the same thing: the strength of your prescription. If you're nearsighted you will have a minus (-) before your values, and if you are farsighted you will have a plus (+).

Cylinder (CYL)
This is for people with astigmatism. This is when one part of the eye needs more correction than the rest. The Cylinder value is written with a minus (-) sign.

Axis
This is only for people with astigmatism. The axis is a number between 0 and 180 and determines the orientation of the Cylinder (CYL).

Lens Thickness
ESS prescription lenses are made out of polycarbonate. As a rule of thumb with polycarbonate lenses, the higher the strength, the thicker the lens. Prescriptions greater than +5/-5 may have a slightly thicker lens than your typical eyeglasses.

Pupillary Distance (PD)
Your Pupillary Distance, or PD, is the distance in millimeters (mm) from the center of one pupil to the center of the other. Can’t find your PD? No problem. You can leave the default setting of 63 which is the average measurement for adults.

Can I submit to my vision insurance?
You can submit a claim to your vision insurance carrier by sending your Order Invoice that will be emailed to you once your prescription order ships.
