To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of ESS, we were able to catch up with retired ESS founder, John Dondero. The ESS team joined General Manager Mike Vigueria as he interviewed John about how the company was started, the breakthroughs, and the incredible product innovations that can occur through intense listening to our customers. ESS Founded in 1998 by John Dondero

Eye Safety Systems was founded by John Dondero in Sun Valley, Idaho in 1998. He had a mission to engineer the best eye protection solutions by innovating through intense listening to customers. Starting with the production of fire goggles and in 1999 introducing Military goggles, the ESS team has always been determined to revolutionize eye safety through rigorous research and development.

Ballistic Eyewear Introduced in 2002

 In 2002, Eye Safety Systems introduced ballistic eyewear with the ESS ICE Eyeshield (interchangeable component eyeshield), revolutionizing the eye safety industry. This marked the first of many successes for ESS, leading to the creation of the Recon, Flyby, and CDI sunglasses in 2003. Since then, the assortment has expanded to cover the needs of Service Members and Outdoors enthusiasts alike.

Decades of Eye Pro Innovation

Eye Safety Systems continued an impressive period of innovation for decades. In 2011, the ESS Crossbow was approved for use by the U.S. Marines and was quickly followed by numerous popular new models including 5B sunglasses in 2011, ESS Flight Pro Goggles in 2012, and the Influx goggle with its advanced Adjustable Ventilation System (AVS) technology in 2014. These products represent a commitment to improving eye safety that is at the forefront of the ESS team’s values.

U.S. Army APEL Approved Protection and Much More

In 2014, the ESS Rollbar was approved for use by the U.S. Army APEL and has since been followed by many more models to protect our troops, such as the ESS Crossblade in 2019 and the Crossblade LPL-5 Laser Protective Lenses in 2022. Today, ESS is on a mission to continue innovating the best ballistic eye protection available, with a bright future of improved safety features and protective eyewear technologies in 2023 and beyond.
